Hostels in Slovenia that we think are the best and worth staying at

Hostels, or backpackers as they are also known, are a very popular form of cheap accommodation in Slovenia. They are ideal for groups, youths and single travelers as they are designed to help you meet and interact with other travelers.

Slovenia hostels are almost always in great locations – in cities they are generally very well located close to public transport lines and tourist attractions and in coastal areas they are usually within walking distance to a beach and with great views. They provide budget-oriented accommodation where guests can rent a bed in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge and often also a kitchen. Private rooms are usually available too. The staff in hostels is almost always very friendly and helpful. More often than not the staff are either other travelers or a local who enjoys the interaction with the traveling community. They are usually a fantastic source of information for things to do and see in the area, especially when it comes to budget travel.

Competition between Slovenia hostels has grown over the past 10 years so the quality has risen considerably and there are now some really great hostels in Slovenia. Find out which are the ones that we recommend and why!

Hostels in Slovenia that we recommend
HOSTEL TRESOR
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Exterior of Hostel Tresor in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia

Hostel Tresor is one of the most famous and popular hostels in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana. It is located in the perfect location in the heart of the city, within a short walk's distance to the Dragon Bridge, Triple Bridge, Preseren Square, Castle Funicular to name a few landmarks. The main bus and train station are only a 10 minute walk up the main street. It's very easy to find and easy to come back to if you need to during the day. The hostel is very well managed and has a lot of character - the building was once a bank. The hostel decor is charming with different quotes on the walls and various allusions to its previous life as a bank. There are several dorm rooms with 4-10 beds and also a few private rooms. The dorm rooms are light, spacious and clean, although the plug sockets away from the beds aren't very practical. The beds and pillows are quite comfortable. The rooms on the 3rd and 4th floor have fantastic views of the Ljubljana Castle! If you are a light sleeper, try to avoid the room that looks onto the common room. The shared bathrooms and separate WCs are kept very clean. The showers are great and really powerful and there are plenty of showers on each floor meaning you never have to wait. The towels that are available to borrow are small - not great in a shared bathroom. The hostel also provides several common areas and there's a great atmosphere when it comes to meeting people. There's no proper kitchen, which is a shame given the size of the hostel. The included breakfast is basic but adequate for the rate. The staff are friendly and approachable, always smiling and quick to help - to provide tourist information and to direct to interesting places, to recommend activities and more. The free WiFi is a little slow but reliable. There are also laundry facilities available. The hostel is in a pedestrian area, so, if you arrive by car, we recommend that you park at the train station car park, which is €8 overnight. All in all, this is a really interesting hostel. Aside from the superb location, friendliness of the staff, and cleanliness of the property, the views from the top floors are hard to beat for a budget accommodation. Just keep in mind that this isn't the best place for a good night's sleep.

KVA HOSTEL
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Exterior of Kva Hostel in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia

Kva Hostel is a very new, centrally located hostel in Ljubljana that opened its doors in August 2017. It is run by two sisters and a friend, all of whom are really friendly and welcoming and putting a lot of effort into making sure their project succeeds. The hostel is conveniently located in the Old Town. It is 5 minutes walk from the Triple Bridge area and 10 minutes walk to the funicular that goes up to the Ljubljana Castle. This is a mixed type accommodation with a mix of 4, 6 and 8 bed dorm rooms and private double rooms with either shared or private bathrooms. The dorm rooms are spacious, bright and well equipped with big lockers, large openable windows and good heating. The bunk beds are sturdy and each has own power outlet and reading lamp. Top bunks would benefit from a shelf to place phones, water bottles, etc. on at night. The private rooms are very good size too and the beds are very comfortable, mattress is just the right amount of firmness. Some rooms have great views of the city or the river. The bathrooms are spotlessly clean and the hot showers work well. The combined kitchen and common area is great for socialising, It's a huge space with beautiful wooden flooring, quirky antique furniture mixed with contemporary design touches and a good view over the Ljubljanica river. The included breakfast is surprisingly good for a hostel of this kind and includes fresh bread, fruits, jams, cereals, muesli, yoghurts, teas, coffee and milk. The free WiFi works well in any part of the hostel. There's no parking available at the hostel but chargeable parking is located nearby. In summary, this hostel is awesome and a really pleasant way to discover all that Slovenia's capital Ljubljana has to offer. The staff are super friendly, the whole hostel is extremely clean, the location is superb, and the breakfast is very decent.

HOSTEL VRBA
Ljubljana, Slovenia
Exterior of Hostel Vrba in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia

Hostel Vrba is a fantastic hostel with a very relaxed feel located a pleasant 10 minute walk by the river from the core of Slovenia's capital Ljubljana. The bus and train station are a 20 minute walk away. The property itself is beautiful, well maintained and situated in a nice neighborhood that offers plenty of choices for food, drinks, and chilling. There is a supermarket just a minute walk away and also a nice bakery. The hostel is medium-sized with 4 dorm rooms with 2 to 4 bunk beds and there's also a private room with twin beds. The rooms are well decorated and clean and all beds have a lamp and plug socket. The rooms are not air conditioned so on a warm summer night it's necessary to open the windows or the temperature in the room gets very hot. The bathrooms are of a good standard and always clean and also spacious with good showers and plenty of hot water. The common areas inside the hostel are welcoming and well designed for socialising. There are plenty of areas to sit alone or in groups. They have a nice, well equipped kitchen and a computer for guest to use. The ladies working at the hostel are amazing, so kind and friendly with great info and recommendations. The free WiFi is excellent (which is usually quite rare in hostels). If you have a car, the free parking is a big bonus and convenient, despite being a short 5 minute walk away from the hostel. All in all, it's not often that a hostel has a great location, great staff and is clean and comfortable and Hostel Vrba has all that. It's such a lovely hostel with a very relaxed feel, it isn’t very loud but very nice to meet people.

CASTLE HOSTEL 1004
Bled, Slovenia
Collage of Castle Hostel 1004 in Bled, Slovenia

Castle Hostel 1004 enjoys a reputation as being one of Europe's best hostels. It's in a great location being only a 2 minute walk from the main bus station in Bled (underneath the castle) and it's about a 5 minute walk from the lake. It's in the older part of Bled, away from big hotels and the main restaurant strip which is 10 minutes on foot. A supermarket is a 2 minute walk away so super easy to pop out and pick up extras. There is also a great cafe and cake shop just across the road. The hostel itself isn't very big, but it's comfortable and the facilities feel newish overall. There are several dorm rooms with 6-12 beds and also a few private rooms. The dorm rooms are of average size but the beds are comfortable and sheets clean. There are lockers next to the beds, as well as your own socket and a light. They have plenty of very clean individual showers and toilets. There's a nice common area with sofa, tables, computers and TV, free internet and PlayStation. The common area itself is quite small, but it's got everything you need and makes for a friendly place. It shuts at 22:00 each night, so this is not a party hostel, but a very cosy relaxing place to spend a a few nights. There's a well equipped modern kitchen with good fridge space and arrangements for identifying left overs. They also have a fantastic huge balcony with loads of seats and great views. The whole place is very clean and tidy with a 'shoes left in the hallway' policy and has a fresh feel. The guys who own it are very friendly and helpful, giving you a tour of the hostel when you arrive and have extensive knowledge about the Bled area and are always available to help you with any decision making on what to do, where to go and how to get there - and all with fun and a smile. They know their town inside out. As the hostel is not very big, it's easy to meet other travelers. The only downsides to the hostel are the weak WiFi signal in some rooms and lack of air conditioning. All in all, a great budget-oriented place to stay in Bled. It's a hostel, but if you're used to that and the usual hostel set up then it's perfect - comfortable cheap, cosy, clean!

JAZZ HOSTEL BLED
Bled, Slovenia
Collage of Jazz Hostel Bled in Slovenia

Jazz Hostel Bled is a wonderful quaint hostel conveniently located just on the edge of town with easy access to all amenities. It is about a 5-10 minute walk to the lake and the main bus station, 2 minutes to a very decent priced supermarket and 10-15 minutes to the castle. A number of restaurants, bars and cafes are pretty much right across the street. The hostel itself is small but beautifully maintained and has a very relaxed, easy going atmosphere. Both dorm beds and private rooms (with private or shared bathrooms) are available. The dorm rooms are clean, comfortable, spacious and very modern. Each bed has its own bed light, socket and huge locker space under the bed. There is even a balcony attached to the top storey dorm from which you get an amazing view of the mountains. The private rooms are beautiful, tastefully decorated, up-to-date with fixtures, all with very comfortable beds and great views. Both private and shared bathrooms are modern and very clean with plenty of hot water. They offer complimentary towels and bath necessities, too! There's also a nice two bedroom apartment/suite that is great for families and has a fully equipped kitchen and a lovely bathroom with an awesome shower. Other facilities in the hostel include a kitchen, computers which are free to use, free WiFi, luggage storage and a bar next door. The kitchen is well equipped and has two hobs, a George Foreman grill, two fridges and all the pots, pans and crockery you could possibly need. The breakfast available for guests is very tasty and also excellent value. There's a nice amount of choice including eggs, ham, bacon, cheese, waffles, breads, cereals, etc. The hostel also organises the all-you-can-eat barbecue every second night for less than you'd pay for an appetizer for most places in town, The owners Jani and his wife Urska are so welcoming, friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much bother and they also give you a map and a quick guide to the town and recommend food places and attractions along with discount vouchers for most places. There is a neat bar attached to the hostel, which is also run by Jani and family. The bar is also wallet-friendly and a great place to meet other guests. The free WiFi is great, with average download speed of just over 4Mbps, so great. Parking is easy and free on the premises. All in all, it's a fantastic budget option, definitely one of the best in Bled.

GARDEN HOUSE BLED
Bled, Slovenia
Collage of Garden House Bled in Slovenia

Garden House Bled is a charming and very unique small hostel with an upcycled theme which works beautifully. The location is great and tranquil and it's just a short 3-5 minute walk to the lake and many nice restaurants and bars, also very close to a supermarket (3 minutes on foot). The decor of the hostel is adorable, it is creatively rustic, made entirely of upcycled and recycled materials for a beautiful shabby chic look. The attention to detail is truly amazing and everything is very clean and tidy. This is a mixed type accommodation with a mix of 4 and 6 bed dorm rooms and private double rooms. The beds and also bunk beds are surprisingly very comfortable with clean and fresh linen and thick mattresses. The bathrooms are cleaned a few times a day and have everything you need. If you want to use the shower you get the entire bathroom to yourself rather than just a cubicle, which seems like a luxury compared to hostels which usually just have a row of showers. It makes showering and dressing much easier and pleasant. The communal kitchen and lounge area is very well furnished but still remains to have a rustic feel. Kitchen is well equipped which makes cooking and preparing food easy. Again, all the areas are very tidy and clean. The kitchen also has a lot of free food/ingredients for use. Lounge includes large flatscreen TV with several international channels. They have awesome heating systems as well as a great big furnace oven to keep the communal areas pleasantly warm in the colder months. The outside areas are very pretty as well with areas to sit out and relax. There's a BBQ and fire pit for guests to use and the lighting in the trees at night look so beautiful. It's obvious that a lot of thought has gone into small details which gives this unique hostel a charming atmosphere. The owners and all the staff at the hostel are genuinely friendly and eager to help with any queries. They have so many activities you can book with them. There's free WiFi but the signal isn't very strong in some of the rooms. Limited free parking is available but fills quickly. In summary, perfect location less than 5 minutes walk to the lake and main restaurants, comfortable beds and nicely decorated rooms, very clean, lovely chill out garden area and very friendly and helpful staff.

Val Hostel Piran is located right in the heart of Piran, only 50 meters from the seaside and three minutes walk from the main Tartini square. It's well signposted and easy to find and there are several restaurants, cafes, bakeries and bars within 5 minutes walking. The rooms are basic and a bit outdated in decor however they are reasonably clean and the beds are quite comfortable. The shared bathrooms are well maintained and clean. The staff are wonderful, full of knowledge and will help you with just about anything you throw at them. The breakfast is good and certainly above average for hostel standards and is a spread of meats, cheeses, cereal, yogurt, bread, etc. The shared kitchen is well equipped but can be a little crowded in mornings. The free WiFi works only in one side of the hostel - they need to invest in another modem/booster. The parking is a bit of an issue in Piran - you have to park right outside town in the central parking facility - it is a little less than a 15 minute walk, or you can catch a free bus into town that runs every ten minutes.

HOSTEL VILLA DOMUS
Koper, Slovenia
Exterior of Hostel Villa Domus in Koper, Slovenia

Hostel Villa Domus is a lovely hostel type accommodation housed in a new modern building on the edge of Koper's old town and close to the bus station. It is a 15 minute walk into the seafront area, meaning hostel is quiet. There are lots of eateries and shopping centre within walking distance. This is a mixed type accommodation and you can book either a bed in a 4-bed dorm room or a twin room, studio or apartment. All twin rooms, studios and apartments come with a private bathroom and studios and apartments also have a small kitchen which is good for those who want to cook. The accommodation is hostel / student type, so pretty basic, but the hostel is relatively new, so all the rooms and bathrooms are modern and very clean. Floor to ceiling windows are great, so bright and light. The bunk beds in the dorm rooms are made of metal and they shake a little and squeak when someone gets in/out or is just moving about. Would have been better if they were attached to the wall and less squeaky. The beds in all twin rooms, studios and apartments are much more comfortable and the linens smell fresh. Some rooms have beautiful views of Koper's old town. The staff are great, they are friendly, knowledgeable and make you feel extremely welcome, They go out of their way to make sure you have the information you need and make recommendations on how best to use your time. The unpretentious bistro on the ground floor is a bonus, offering nice simple meals and drinks at excellent price. Free WiFi works well throughout the building. The parking is available about a 2-minute walk away for a small fee. All in all, a great, value for money, well located and clean place to stay in Koper. Hostel Secret Garden is a small hostel located in the middle of Koper's lovely old town. It's in an old building, but on the inside it's shiny and new. The hostel was refurbished in 2016, so the decor and fittings are still new and fresh. It is well signposted and easy to find and there are many restaurants, cafes, bars and a nice bakery within 5 minutes walking. Koper is really an incredible place to wander round and soak in the atmosphere of the narrow winding streets. The hostel itself has two bathrooms with showers, and two kitchens (cooking is allowed) with a dining table, between 4 dormitories of 4-6 beds. The rooms are on the small side but clean. Bunk beds are solid and a good size with a personal book light. There are security lockers and lot of shelves for everyone in the room. The rooms are air-conditioned and one also has a small balcony. Both bathrooms are modern and clean with hot showers, but even though it's a small hostel with only 4 rooms, you might have to wait a little for your turn in the morning to get in. The hostel itself feels friendly and social, and the owner Mustafa is at the reception desk most of the time and happy to chat or answer any queries about the local area. Everyone gets a key to the entrance, so there's no curfew. There's a nice little garden outside with Mediterranean plants and you can also use a BBQ. The free WiFi is strong and public parking is available nearby for a very small fee. All in all, a great small hostel with great quality of facilities, clean, great central location and quiet.

The building divides its resources between being a school for forestry/woodworking and a youth hostel. The hostel has been renovated few years ago and feeling of new is following you around the whole place. The rooms are spacious, clean and the beds very comfortable with lots of closet space. HOSTEL SONCE
Ptuj, Slovenia
Exterior of Hostel Sonce in Ptuj Slovenia

Hostel Sonce (which means Sun in Slovenian) is not a hostel in the traditional sense, as all the rooms are private and have ensuite bathrooms. Not only the rooms are private, they are spotless, all have laminated wood floors, really good A/C and a flat screen TV. The hostel is more like a nice 3-star hotel. The beds are very comfortable, with sunny linens. The bathrooms are modern and have powerful water in the shower with plenty of hot water. There are also lovely common areas where guests can gather, both inside in a common room where coffee and tea are available all day, and outside, in a flower and plant-filled patio with garden furniture and swings. The owners Iva and Ales are wonderful! They are very helpful and go out of their way to help guests enjoy their stay. Both speak other languages, English, German and Italian. A nice basic breakfast of tea/coffee and sweet croissants is provided. The location is just across the bridge from the historic center of town, at most a 10-minute walk to town, and in a very quiet neighborhood. It's actually midway between town and the Ptuj thermal spa and water park, so the location is perfect for those who plan to visit both the town and the thermal spa & water park. A bakery is located across the street and a supermarket down the next block. Plenty of free parking is available for those with a car. Also, the WiFi works really well. Kranjska Gora, Slovenia
Youth Hostel Barovc Kranjska Gora Slovenia

Youth Hostel Barovc has the reputation of being the best hostel in the area. It is well deserved. The hostel is 15 minutes walk from the centre of Kranjska Gora, but this can be an advantage - it's peaceful and has an amazing view of the Jasna lake and the Slovenian Alps. The rooms are of different shapes and sizes, but all of them are clean and nicely furnished and have their own shower and toilet. The rooms above the dining area have an amazing view so make sure that you get one of them. There is also a nice lounge where it's easy to get in touch with other travellers. Hostel Idrija is a nice budget accommodation located only 5 minutes walk from the town centre. The location is great and the view is awesome from the hostel, but be aware there are many steps to climb if you are travelling without a car. The hostel is housed in the renovated building of a former school. It is not modern but it's clean and relatively comfortable. It has many sinks and bathrooms due to being a school in the past.
