Rogla Ski Resort Review
There’s a reason Rogla is one of the most-visited ski resorts in Slovenia every year: it features 11 very well-maintained ski runs totalling almost 14 kilometres for skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities. The runs are always well groomed, and they have excellent snow-making capabilities. Depending on precise weather conditions, it is open from early December until the middle of April.
One major advantage of this centre is the modern infrastructure, two relatively new and fast 4-seater lifts carry you to the top. There are also 5 T-bar and 6 J-bar lifts. The lift lines aren’t bad on most weekends, but on holidays can get pretty crowded and expect several delays as it always seems like they’re stopping the lifts to help some newbie get up.
All types of teaching are available in Slovenian and English. The instructors are excellent, very professional and knowledgeable. They know how to teach, they have fun, and they are very friendly, especially for kid’s programs.
Night skiing on the Jasa (500 meters) and Kosuta (730 meters) runs is good, although you do need to buy an additional lift pass to ski at night. Day skiing ends at 4 pm, the runs are groomed ready for night skiing 5-9 pm.
For the kids, there’s the Uniorcek slope with children’s snow park and a kindergarten. Snowboarders and freestyle skiers can challenge themselves in the fun park with 15+ slopestyle elements, a half-pipe, earth-shaped ‘kickers’, and two ‘big air’ ski jumps. There’s cross-country facilities too with 25 kilometres of trails through nice scenery. There’s even the opportunity to ride horses. The eating and drinking places on the slopes are well priced with a variety of choice. Last but not least, there’s also plenty of facilities for those who can’t resist a little après-ski. Various accommodation is available walking distance from the ski slopes or in the nearby town Zrece.
Rogla is also a certified climatic health resort as the pure air is having a virtuous effect on pulmonary health conditions.
It’s one and a half hours east from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana on the A1 motorway (Exit near Velenje and follow the signs) and a little less than an hour’s drive from the second largest city, Maribor.
Rogla is one of Slovenia’s flagship ski destinations. It isn’t a huge resort, but good value with something for everyone and almost always great snow conditions. For beginners and families there’s a ski school, large equipment rental facility, almost 6 kilometres of easy slopes, children’s snow park and a kindergarten. For everyone, there are well-groomed slopes, modern infrastructure, night skiing and lots of accommodation options available on the mountain (book early) – and 100 days of guaranteed skiing per year.
