About The Photographer
Walle Grevik is a passionate nature and landscape photographer, hiker, and traveler based in Helsingborg, Sweden. He has been active in the outdoors since he was a child, taking up hiking and backpacking at an early age. He bought his first camera ten years ago, just so he could come back from his hiking trips with something more than only memories. Walle became hooked on photography right away, and have loved it ever since. There is something really magical about our natural world and Walle’s goal is to capture even just a fraction of this amazing beauty of the nature, and share it with all of us.
Walle has traveled to many countries around Europe including Iceland, Faroe Islands, Scotland, Ireland, and Greece. This spring, he and his hiking partner, Fredrik Vestlund, decided to visit Slovenia and do a 9-day hiking adventure through the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park. They started their tour in the beautiful alpine village of Kranjska Gora on May 26th and ended it in Bohinj on June 4th. Walle took some really beautiful photos during this hiking tour, and he was kind enough to share some of them with us here at Travel Slovenia.

The statue of Goldhorn or Zlatorog as it is called in Slovene is guarding Lake Jasna, a picturesque alpine lake with stunning surroundings, located only two kilometres from the village of Kranjska Gora.

The Vrsic mountain pass road from the village of Kranjska Gora to the Trenta Valley takes travelers past larch forests, idyllic meadows, under ragged mountain peaks, into a beautiful green valley dominated by the emerald Soca river. It’s one of the most spectacular drives in Europe.
When hiking the Slovenian Alps, it is always good to rest and recuperate at one of Slovenia’s 170+ or so mountain huts. The Koca Na Gozdu mountain hut lies right next to the Vrsic mountain pass road at an elevation of 1,226 meters (4,022 feet).

The nature in the Triglav National Park is really special and beautiful with lots of rolling green hills.
The beautiful Trenta valley is located in the heart of the Triglav National Park. It’s surrounded by the most magnificent mountains, spotted by traditional houses everywhere and lush with the greenest green you can imagine.

River Soca or Isonzo as it is called in Italian is a 138-kilometre long river that flows through western Slovenia and northeastern Italy. It’s considered the most beautiful river in Slovenia and one of the most beautiful rivers in the whole of Europe.
The Soca river is famous for its crystal-clear emerald-green water – its second name is the Emerald Beauty. Not many rivers in the world retain such color through all the length.

Lake Bohinj is surrounded by the most majestic mountains of the Julian Alps.
Rainbow over Lake Bohinj after the rain. Rainbows are such gorgeous phenomena, aren’t they? Up there in the sky, you see an arch of seven beautiful colors, each band as lovely and enchanting as the next.
A trip out on a tourist boat is a delightful way to enjoy Lake Bohinj, which is an Eco friendly lake so only electric boats are allowed on the lake. The boat is quiet and very comfortable, it seats 52 passengers. The driver and hosts are very informative on both going and return trips pointing out things of interest and explaining about the lake. It’s a lovely and tranquil way of crossing Bohinj.
Lake Bohinj is probably the most popular fly-fishing destination in the Triglav National Park. You can fish from the boat or from the shore, but only barbless hooks can be used. The lake is populated by the indigenous brown trout, burbot and chub as well as the foreign Arctic char, which is becoming the prevalent fish species in the lake. And there’s nothing wrong if you release the fish you’ve caught back into the water.

For for first timers and novice paddlers, there is no better canoeing and kayaking location than the Bohinj lake.

Lake Bohinj is surrounded by high mountains from three sides and this dramatically beautiful mountain scenery that surrounds the lake is crisscrossed with a vast network of hiking trails. It’s a true paradise for hikers.
The Vogel mountain is rising dramatically high above Lake Bohinj and offers stunning views of the entire Bohinj valley and the surrounding mountains of the Julian Alps. It can be reached by a cable-car that takes you 1,665 altitude metres high (5,462 feet) to the top of Vogel from the far end of the lake.
Another stunning view of Lake Bohinj and the Triglav National Park from the Vogel viewpoint. While you can get to the Vogel mountain by a cable car, you should still wear appropriate shoes with good grip.
The Vogel mountain is famous for spotting some local wildlife with a possible chance to see some Chamois and the Alpine Ibex.
The 78-metre-high Savica is Slovenia’s most famous waterfall, located above Lake Bohinj. To reach the waterfall, follow the signs from the village of Ukanc at the far end of the lake. It is accessed by a fairly steep climb on well-made steps in less than half an hour. A viewing platform provides great photo opportunities whilst keeping you dry from the spray of the waterfall.
