All You Need To Know To Visit The Kozjak Waterfall, Slovenia

Introducing The Kozjak Waterfall

The Kozjak Waterfall is a very photogenic 15-metre-high waterfall located at the edge of the Triglav National Park near the town of Kobarid in the far north-western corner of Slovenia. The waterfall is created by the crystal-clear Kozjak Stream, a left tributary of Soca River, which springs from several catchment areas high under the 2,142-metre-high Krncica mountain, runs through several chutes, and drops over six waterfalls, but only the lower two are accessible to visitors.

Kozjak Waterfall Review

Many people say that the Kozjak waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia, and we definitely have to agree with that. It isn’t the largest, the highest or the most water abundant, but it’s one of the most memorable waterfalls you will ever see and totally unique. It is located in the western part of Slovenia, near the town of Kobarid and is one of the most visited natural wonders in the area. It’s accessible by a well-marked and well-maintained hiking path – it is a semi-easy and very scenic hike of approximately 20 minutes from the parking lot. There are a series of small bridges and a board walk at the end which can be slippery, so wear appropriate shoes with good grip. It’s also possible to hike to the Kozjak waterfall from the town center of Kobarid – it’s a lovely, user-friendly 50 minute hike that is suitable also for young kids. Alternatively, the waterfall is also part of the Kobarid Historical Trail.

The waterfall is hidden in a fairly large open karst cave-like area and falls 15 meters into an amazing emerald green pool nested between magnificent dark rocks – it is the setting and the color of the water which makes Kozjak spectacular. The effect of the dark rock contrasting against the emerald green pool is really breathtaking. It is also possible to swim here, but the water is cold and very refreshing, so if you do decide to go for a swim, be mentally prepared for the cold!

If you’re planning a visit to the Kobarid area, then we strongly encourage you to put the Kozjak waterfall on your itinerary.
