Travel Interview: Ida Ploug Pahus of Live Life Fully Alive

1. For our readers who don’t know you, please tell us a bit about yourself and how you started to travel?
Hi, I’m Ida Pahus. I’m 21 years old and blog over at livelifefullyalive.com and am also currently studying social sciences at university. Since I was a little kid I have been travelling with my family. So far I have been living on 4 different continents – North America, South America, Asia (more specifically Thailand) and Europe and have boarded planes more than 114 times so far.

2. Please tell us about your travel blog Live Life Fully Alive? When did you begin writing it? What makes it different from other travel blogs?
I started my blog back in March 2015 recently after publishing my first (and so far only) book; “The One Who Is Always Near” because I wanted a platform to keep sharing my writing and heart on. And so Live Life Fully Alive was born. My blog is a mix of all things fashion, faith and travelling – 3 things that makes me live fully alive.

3. Where are you currently in the world?
I am currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark – a 10 minute train ride away from the airport of Copenhagen so I’m not complaining 😉

4. How and when did you decide to explore Slovenia?
I went to Slovenia on a road trip in the summer of last year (2018) where I also went to Slovakia, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Germany. But visiting Slovenia – especially Lake Bled and Ljubljana – were places on top of my list I had dreamed of seeing for quite some time prior to the trip. The locations really blew my wildest expectations.

5. Do you have a favourite destination in Slovenia and why?
Lake Bled for sure. That lake and its island is pure magic. And the water is so blue – no edits needed. I will for sure be returning to Lake Bled!

6. Any interesting experiences during your travels in Slovenia?
Yes, going to the Museum of Illusions in Ljubljana was so interesting and so much fun. The museum offers around 40 exhibits, optical illusions and holograms. All to provide a different experience of space and everything you think you know about it.

7. What did you find in Slovenia that you didn’t expect?
Mountains!

8. Is there anywhere you visited in Slovenia that did not live up to your expectations?
Nope. All the places I saw in Slovenia far exceeded my expectations. I truly do not understand why it is not one of the most visited countries on earth but that’s also part of what makes is so unique and special.

9. Did you learn any Slovenian words words while you were in Slovenia?
Yes, I quickly learned “dober dan” which is a very common way of greeting someone in Slovenia. This is a very good phrase to know as many of the locals are very hospitable and will greet you.

10. Have you tried any traditional Slovenian dishes or desserts such as the Carniolan sausage, Zlikrofi or Potica?
I tried the Kremšnita which is a cake filled vanilla cream.

11. What is your advice to others who want to visit and explore Slovenia?
Go for it. Start saving, dreaming and planning and then you will find yourself there one day soon.

12. How would you describe Slovenia in one word.
Magical.

13. How would you describe your travel style and what can readers expect when they visit your blog and social media?
My travel style and social media are characterized by feminine way of dressing and girly looks mixed with my love for wild and crazy adventures. So you really can find me hiking in a long, beautiful maxi dress with nothing about it being staged – it’s just me being me.

14. How do you fund your travelling?
Most of my travels are with my family; mother, father and brother, and usually my parents pay most of it, which is such a blessing. But some of my travels I also do with friends or by myself and fund it by saving, saving and saving and not often eating out when I’m home. I also have a part-time job besides my full-time study.

15. Can you imagine life without travel?
Honestly no. Because travel have meant so much in developing me and making me who I am today.

16. What is your favourite place in the world to travel to and why?
Hands down Yosemite National Park in California (and California in general). I went to Yosemite for the first time back in 2016 and fell in love at first sight. The place is unlike any other place I have ever seen which says a lot. I loved it so much I decided to come back in the spring of 2017 to live right outside of the park and in May this year, I will be returning to my favorite place. What I love about this place is that is so wild and you can go there feeling like you are the only person in the park because it is that big.

17. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Good question, but for right now where I’m living (Copenhagen) is the place – hence why I live here. It has taken some time for me to adjust to life in such a big city being from a smaller town many hours away but I slowly am getting there.

18. Have you visited a place that turned out to be completely different to how you imagined? If so, how?
One place I had kind of low expectations about travelling to that was put to shame was Athens, Greece. Before going I had heard so many people say that Athens was an ugly and very dirty city full of old non-maintained buildings but I found the city to be very beautiful. What I heard was true for some areas but surely not for all areas – I can especially recommend seeing Anatiofika, which is such a pretty white corner of Athens. On the other hand one place I had high expectations for that did not meet them was Paris. Said to be such a beautiful and overly romantic city but I actually had a hard time finding pretty buildings and streets not dirty with pollution and trash. All to say you never know how you will like a city before going there. So go and take a look yourself and find out whether you agree or not…

19. Do you have a Bucket List? If so where are the 5 top places on it?
Oh, sure I do. I’m such a dreamer but never let my dreams just stay dreams. So here are my top 5:
1. Santorini, Greece
2. Lofoten and Preikestolen, Norway
3. Banff and the whole British Colombia area in Canada
4. Charleston, South Carolina
5. New Zealand

20. Please share a unique or funny travel experience.
My most unique travel memory was last year when me and my family decided to stay at the Moritzburg Castle in Germany and we were the only ones allowed to drive to the castle using the front entrance so people immediately thought we were royals or some kind of VIP’s which resulted in a lot of fun moments.

21. Have you had any bad experiences whilst travelling?
I have tried the classic experience with baggage not arriving in the airport and once someone had mistaken my suitcase with her own and had brought my suitcase all the way back to her home before realizing it was the wrong one. That meant I had to go 2-3 weeks without my baggage…

22. You capture some stunning photos of the destinations you visit. What favourite photos would you like to share with us from your trip in Slovenia?
