All You Need To Know To Visit Lake Jasna In Kranjska Gora, Slovenia

Introducing Lake Jasna

Lake Jasna is a small, aquamarine lake with white sand around its rim and the high mountain peaks of the Julian Alps as a dramatic backdrop. It lies at the confluence of the two branches of the Pisnica stream in the far northwestern corner of Slovenia, just south of the alpine resort of Kranjska Gora. A statue of Zlatorog, the golden-horned ibex, stands proudly at the entrance and provides perfect tourist photo opportunities.

Lake Jasna Review

Tucked into the far northwestern corner of Slovenia, only 2 kilometres to the south of Kranjska Gora, in the direction of the Vrsic mountain pass, is a picturesque lake called Jasna which marks the beginning of the Triglav National Park. A delightful walk from the centre of Kranjska Gora through a small park and along a road, or a lovely walk along the river by the Korona Hotel will bring you to the lake. By car, it’s about a 5 minute or less drive from Kranjska Gora or about an hour from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana in average traffic. You can park on the main road right by the lake for free or there is a car park a few minutes walk away.

The name ‘Jasna’ derives from the Slovenian word for ‘clear,’ and it is quickly apparent how the lake got its name. The Julian Alps dominate the scenery and on a clear, sunny, calm day the water looks like a piece of glass reflecting everything so perfectly. On a boulder by the lake stands the dark bronze statue of the Zlatorog, or Goldenhorn – the magical stag believed to guard the ridges around the lake. Don’t forget to take a photo or two! The circular walk that wraps around the lake is pleasant with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the remarkable mountain views and fresh air. The path is very manageable for pretty much anyone and suitable for strollers. There is a lookout tower which you can climb up to the top for some fantastic photos of the views, thought the ladders are a little steep. The ‘Library by the Lake’, a little hut where you can borrow a book to read is available too.

The lake is popular with locals and tourists alike. In 2015, it underwent a facelift that even boosted its popularity. They arranged a better access for swimmers and sunbathers, added new beach areas, opened a bar and ice cream parlour, and built a new three-level wooden diving platform which resembles a castle turret. There are places to get changed for swimming, and toilets too. During the summer the locals now use the lake as a substitute for a seaside so it’s quite busy at weekends but very quiet during the week.

The lake is also a very popular fishing spot. Of course, fly fishing is the only type allowed. In winter, the lake freezes and is a fabulous place to go ice skating.

All in all, the Jasna lake is a stunningly beautiful place to see with a lovely circular walk that wraps around the lake, incredible views, with a 3 level diving platform and central platform to swim to. There are plenty of different ways to enjoy the lake including picnicking, swimming, walking, fishing and ice skating (in the winter). You can purchase refreshments and ice-creams or even borrow a book to read! The area is spotlessly clean and the water looks as though you can drink it. The whole place has an air of unpretentiousness and is a great place to spend an afternoon.
