Guesthouses in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana that we recommend
PENZION PRI ZABARJU
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Penzion Pri Zabarju is a family run guest house located on the south side of Slovenia's capital Ljubljana. On the map it seems a bit out of town but it's only a 10 minute bus ride away (the bus station is a 5 minute walk from the guesthouse) and very easy to get into the city centre. It started as a restaurant and the owners converted the upstairs into bedrooms in 2013. The rooms are spacious and very clean with comfortable beds. Perhaps fussy people would complain that the rooms are a little basic, especially if you compare them with 4-stars hotels, but they have absolutely everything one needs for comfortable stay. The bathrooms are large and modern with plenty of light. The staff couldn't be more helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. The breakfast is a varied buffet with everything one might expect including cold meats, cheese, cereal, fruit, eggs, omelettes and more. On-site, they have a restaurant with a superb local reputation (offering mostly local dishes beautifully presented, at great value), a cake shop with delicious homemade cakes, an ice cream shop and a cafe bar selling beers and cappuccinos. All these facilities surround a charming courtyard. The free WIFI is very stable and fast (15 Mbps) and the free parking is a bonus too. All in all, if you are looking for a beautiful, traditional, calm and well equipped place to stay while visiting Slovenia's capital Ljubljana, this guesthouse is a fine choice.

GUESTHOUSE STARI TISLER
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Guesthouse Stari Tisler is a historic lodging place, more than a century old, and in the good old days a center for meetings and chat. There is a great restaurant on the ground floor, and one floor up are the rooms. The central location is great, very easy to locate, close to the bus and train stations, and it's just a 5 minute walk to Ljubljana's Old Town where most of the sights and restaurants/cafes/bars are. The guesthouse has 8 rooms and was fully renovated a few years ago. The rooms are a little basic but clean and comfortable enough and each room has a TV with a good selection of international TV channels. If possible, ask for a room overlooking the courtyard, because the rooms on the front facing the traffic are just a little noisy. The bathrooms are clean and have good hot water pressure. The staff are quite friendly and speak excellent English, for those of you worried about a language barrier. The breakfast is included in the room rate. You don't eat breakfast in the restaurant proper, but there is a cosy room not far from the office in which it is served, buffet style. The choice is not huge, but there is certainly enough to eat including cold meats, cheese. cereal, pastries, breads, yoghurt, coffee, teas and juices. The on-site restaurant is very well run and the food delicious and surprisingly affordable. The free wi-fi works great. The parking is in front of the guest house, but they are city parking places, so you have to pay the meter. So, if you arrive by car, we recommend that you park there, get a ticket for an hour, go and check in, and then go and move your car to the train station car park, which is €8 overnight. In summary, this guesthouse is good value for money being so close to the Ljubljana Old Town. While hardly a luxury place it is comfortable and clean with all the facilities you might expect.

VILA TESLOVA
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Vila Teslova is a charming family run accommodation housed in an old building that has been renovated and converted into a guesthouse a few years ago. The property is in a quiet residential area, about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Ljubljana. There are 10 apartments and rooms in the building. They vary in size and shape, but all are very bright, modern, clean. and with windows that open as well as radiator heat. Most rooms also have A/C. The lovely murals on the wall are beautiful and add such a personal touch. The beds are really comfortable, and the pillows are too. There is an extra blanket in the closet, which is nice if you like a little added warmth. The bathrooms are modern, with a walk-in shower and good hot water pressure, The apartments also have a small kitchen with all that is necessary to prepare a meal. There is no lift in the building so bear that in mind with luggage or if you struggle with stairs. Free breakfast in the morning is very decent, especially since there aren't any places to eat immediately near by. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They are happy to help with any queries and offer a nice intro to the city. The free WiFi works extremely well all over the building. If you have a car, there is a small parking area for five or six cars right outside. All in all, a great place to stay within walking distance to the city center and all the main sights in Ljubljana.

PENZION KMECKI HRAM
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Penzion Kmecki Hram is a lovely guest house located in the part of Ljubljana called Tomacevo, 5 km from Ljubljana's Old Town. It's right next to a bus stop for easy travel into the city centre and a supermarket is 100 metres away. The building is relatively new and the whole place is spotlessly clean. The rooms are on the small side, but still comfortable and with all facilities inside. The beds are good quality and are very comfortable. The bathrooms are modern with a walk in shower which has very good water pressure. The staff (two brothers) are very friendly, nice and willing to help in every way possible. The buffet style breakfast is good with a choice of fresh fruit as well as the usual breads, cheese and cold meats, cereals, eggs, yoghurt, etc. The restaurant on-site is excellent, serving mostly Slovenian dishes but also other food as well. The free WiFi works well and has good bandwidth. There is also plenty of parking space on the premises if you need it. All in all, a wonderful guesthouse on the edge of the city, modern, clean and equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay.

GUESTHOUSE SOUL
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Guesthouse Soul is a budget friendly guesthouse located a little outside the centre of Ljubljana with lovely views of the river. A nice supermarket is just across the street and it takes about 20-25 minutes to walk into the city centre with good footpaths all the way. There is also bus stop nearby. The guesthouse itself is an old townhouse/villa with several rooms and an apartment. The rooms are spotlessly clean, trendily decorated and very comfortable. You can sit out on the balcony overlooking the river. The bathrooms are shared but of a very good standard. As there is one bathroom between 3 rooms, it is never that busy where you have to wait to use the shower. There is also a shared kitchen and a lovely living room area. The whole place is immaculately clean. There is a strict no-shoe-policy in the house after the entrance hall. You will receive slippers and have to leave your shoes in the entrance hall. We can only assume it's to help keep the floors clean as we said the place is immaculate. The breakfast included is basic but absolutely fine to start into the day. The hosts, Sergi and Tanja, are the best feature of this guesthouse. They provide a personal touch which is missing at standard hotels. Always cheerful, they will offer tips and advice on places of interest to visit, restaurants, etc. The free WiFi is fast and works flawlessly in the rooms and there are a couple of free parking places in front of the guesthouse if you have a car. All in all, we recommend this guest house if you are looking for a good compromise between location, comfort and price.

GINGER ROOMS
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ginger Rooms is a lovely place to stay located in the heart of Ljubljana. The location is really excellent! It's just steps away from Ljubljana Old Town. You are a stone's throw from the main Preseren square, the Ljubljanica river, the restaurants, the market, the bridges, and even the castle is in walking distance! The old town has no through traffic so it's just the perfect place to stroll around and take loads of photos. The bus station is about 7 minutes walk away. The entrance is quite deceiving as it is in old building and you must ring to get buzzed in and then climb up a couple of flights of stairs to the reception desk. The rooms are of different shapes and sizes, but all are modern, clean and tidy with a good bathroom. There are small amenities that one would not expect on a budget such as bathroom toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, gel), a hair dryer, and a mini-fridge. Some rooms also have a small but functional kitchen with hob and microwave. Air conditioning is effective but controlled centrally, we would suggest the management consider individual remotes. The staff are absolutely lovely, speak excellent English and give lots of advice about places to go and things to see. The WiFi is free and reception is good in the rooms. The parking is available two blocks away for a fee. Overall, if you're looking for a clean, friendly place in an excellent location at a very reasonable price, then you cannot go wrong with this one.

GUEST HOUSE PRI VODNIKU
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Guest House Pri Vodniku is a quaint charming guesthouse situated a little out of the centre of Ljubljana - about a half an hour walk through the beautiful Tivoli park or twenty minutes along a road. There is easy access from the highway and a nearby bus stop for a short 5 minute ride to the old town. The place is decorated beautifully with old wooden beams and high quality furnishings. The interior design is homely and it gives a warm feeling of friendliness. The building is old but well maintained and clean. While the rooms are average, they are big and comfortable. The beds are nice as are the pillows. Sometimes, if the window is open, you can hear traffic, but its reasonably quiet. The bathrooms are modern with a good shower. The owner and staff are wonderful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The breakfast is very good with a good selection including cold meats, cheese, cereal, yoghurt, tomatoes, and breads. Choice of cappuccinos, teas and juices. A huge plus is the on-site restaurant below the guesthouse which is very popular and attracts non-residents. We highly recommend a dinner or lunch here too, the food is delicious and the prices reasonable. The outside terrace area is absolutely charming. The free Wi-Fi and parking are also a major bonus. In summary, a guest house with character, comfortable accommodation, friendly, helpful owner and staff, and great food. It is located 30 minutes walk from the town centre and provides a peaceful alternative to the hotels located in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana.

PENZION POD LIPO
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Penzion Pod Lipo is located in an old but well maintained building in a lovely, quiet, cobblestone courtyard with large Linden trees, just a short 10-15 minute walk to the Triple Bridge in the centre of Ljubljana. Location is in the university area so there are a lot of students and associated fast food places and bars in the area, as well as some restaurants. There's also a restaurant below the pension. The rooms are pretty basic, but comfortable and clean. The beds are comfortable with nice linens. The bathrooms are very clean and towels are of high quality. Each room has its own hot water heater so you always have nice hot water for showers. If possible, ask for a room with a view of the golf course - they're quieter than the rooms on the front facing the street. Be aware there is no lift in the building so if you have mobility issues you may want to find another place to stay. There is a nearby supermarket and bakery which is nice because the guesthouse has a small communal kitchen area for tea and coffee making, and which can be used for preparing your own breakfast. There's no breakfast or other meals served at the guesthouse. The staff are very friendly, and knowledgeable about history and sights. What sets this place apart is the warm hospitality and enthusiasm of the staff. The owner Marjan speaks at least 5 languages and is extremely personable, accommodating, and eager to ensure you have an amazing stay in Ljubljana. The free Wi-Fi works reasonably well in the rooms and they also have free parking in a parking lot down the street, about a 5 minute walk from the guesthouse. All in all, a nice budget-friendly guesthouse that has a 'hostel' feel to it, but is tidy and functional.

GALERIA RIVER
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Galleria River is a modern accommodation in a historic old building known as the Zois Palace. It is ideally located, right in the heart of Ljubljana, in a quiet, pedestrianised street, alongside the Ljubljanica river. There are lots of bars, cafes and restaurants in the immediate vicinity. The rooms are situated on the third floor but at present there's no lift access due to regulations on ancient buildings, so if you have mobility issues, this may not be the place for you. The photos of local attractions on the walls are a nice touch. The rooms are spacious, very clean and well equipped with very comfortable beds, a large TV and with lovely big bathrooms with L'Occitane toiletries - more of an aparthotel. There is no air con in the rooms. You can open the windows but as it is in a central location there is some noise. If possible, try to book a room overlooking the river, makes for a stunning view. Don't be put off by the fact that no breakfast or other meals are available, there are loads of eating places nearby and a wonderful bakery that's open until midnight is just the next block down the street. Or if you're on a budget there are supermarkets nearby too and a fridge and microwave in all the rooms. The staff are really helpful and friendly and they do well in making sure you are comfortable. The free WiFi is reliable and of a decent speed. The parking is available very close to the property and it's one of the cheapest parking areas in the centre of Ljubljana. All in all, a lovely place to stay right by the river and at the start of the pedestrian walkway. The facility is an old-style building but the rooms have modern furnishings and are well kept.
