Introducing Lake Bled

Lake Bled is a picture-perfect lake of iconic beauty. It was formed at the end of the Ice Age and is 2,120 meters long, 1,380 meters wide and up to 30 meters deep. It lies at the foothills of the Julian Alps in the northwestern corner of Slovenia, where it adjoins the town of Bled.

Lake Bled Review

In Slovenia, there is a real place that looks like it came from the fairy tale world! That place is the extraordinary Lake Bled. With an iconic church nestled in a tiny island in the middle of the lake and a spectacular medieval Gothic castle built on a 130-meter cliff overlooking the lake, it’s a fairytale setting. The color of the water is mesmerizing! You can easily walk all around the lake on a lovely flat path. It’s truly like walking through a fairytale. Lots of nice places to stop for a rest or get a snack on the way. It takes between one and one and a half hours to walk around the lake, which is a little more than 2 kilometers long and a little less than 1,5 kilometers wide, with a maximum depth of 30 meters.

Collage of places to stay in Slovenia

In the middle of the lake there is a charming little tear-shaped island, the only island in Slovenia. You can reach it either by swimming their, renting a rowing boat and docking at the island or by taking a traditional gondola-like wooden boat, called a Pletna. The Pletna boat is operated by the pletna oarsman who rows standing up. This profession is very respected and it’s transmitted from generation to generation. The island has several buildings, the main one being the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, built in the 15th century. There are exactly ninety-nine steps that lead from the dock to the church and there is also a wishing bell that grants you one wish upon ringing it.

Lake Bled has the longest swimming season of any alpine lake in Europe (from June to late September). The summer temperatures reach up to 28 degree Celsius. There are designated areas for swimming but most people ignore them and swim wherever they like. It’s free to swim in the lake but there is also a paid swimming area called Grajska Bathing Area that features a climbing wall, swings, a sandpit, two water slides and a nice patch of grass to relax on. Lake Bled is also ideal for rowing since it provides all the natural elements it requires. Row boats can be hired from places all around the lake and it usually takes around two to three hours for a trip to the island and back again with enough time to explore. The lake is also a popular spot for fishermen. Fishing for catfish, pike, carp and lake trout is permitted.

To get panoramic views of Lake Bled you need to visit Bled Castle, a medieval castle built on a cliff overlooking the lake and the city of Bled. Seeking more views of the lake you can follow the steep forest trail up to Velika Osojnica for postcard views of Lake Bled from above. Lake Bled is truly a treasure of Slovenia.

  1. My favourite place on Earth. Have been 4 times in Summer (once in miserable, overcast rain, but still loved it) and was supposed to be there last December, but for COVID.

  2. Last Summer we drove our small campervan down through Europe to camp at the lakeside for a week. It was such a satisfying holiday.

  3. Thank you for the beautiful pictures. I am to old to make it there in person so I really enjoy the pictures, bless you.

  4. What a beautiful selection of photos, I have been there! Twice actually. About two to three years ago. It’s really amazing. There is a tourist train going around the lake.
