Introducing The Postojna Cave
Postojna Cave or Postojnska Jama as it is called in Slovene is a 24-kilometre-long karst cave system near the town of Postojna in southwestern Slovenia. It is one of the top tourist attractions in Slovenia. The caves were created by the Pivka River and opened to the public in 1819.

The Postojna Cave is a stunning underground system of passages, caverns, magnificent halls and stone sculptures that are more than 24 kilometres long. The cave is the most popular natural attraction in Slovenia with over 34 million visitors since it opened to the public. It is located in Postojna in the southwest part of Slovenia, about a half an hour drive from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana or 50 minutes from the coastal town of Piran. It’s also easily accessed from both Croatia and Italy, which makes it a very popular stop for tour groups.
The cave is two million years old and was hollowed out by the Pivka river. It’s the only cave with a double-track railway in the world, where visitors can experience a fun train ride through the extraordinary beautiful underground landscape. Visitors explore almost six kilometres of the cave. You travel on a little train for approximately 10 minutes before disembarking and walking round the caves accompanied by a guide. The ride under magnificent arches, adorned by stalactites resembling chandeliers and through narrow passages, highlighted by perfectly placed lights, is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life. Just make sure you keep your arms in during the train ride, it is stunning how close you sometimes are to the walls. Walking around and being able to look, close up is also wonderful. Along the way you observe out-of-this-world cave features such as icicle-shaped stalactites, columnar stalagmites, and many other strangely shaped formations. The tour also includes the visit of the Concert Hall, which is the largest hall in the Postojna Cave and can accommodate more than 10,000 people. Various concerts have been organized in this hall for over a century and the venue is still extremely popular because of its uniqueness which creates a fantastic atmosphere. In all the tour through the cave takes a little less than an hour and a half and is available in four languages (audio guides are available in a further 12 languages). No special equipment is required, but a warm sweater and comfortable shoes are recommended, as it is very chilly and damp in the cave with the temperature being around 10 degrees Celsius (°C).
There are possibilities for aged and infirm people – even those in wheelchairs. Although there are some steep walkways there are no stairs and everywhere is wheelchair/buggy accessible.

The entrance fee is €22,90 for adults, €1 EUR for children up to 5 years, €13,70 for children up to 15 years and €18,30 for students.

The 4 km ride with an electric train through the breathtaking Postojna Cave is an experience you will remember for the rest of your life.
After about 5 minutes the electric train comes to a stop, at which point visitors can get off and venture along the pathways, taking in the splendour of the rock formations.
Formed over hundred of thousands of years, the odd shapes look like something that could belong on another planet.

The most famous stalagmite of all, Brilliant is a beautiful white, five-metre high limestone formation. Protected by a nearby column, it’s one of the most popular and most photographed spots in the entire cave system.

 The most unique and the most famous living nativity scene in Slovenia is staged along a 5 kilometre path inside the jaw-dropping Postojna Cave. Each year more than 150 performers are acting out the Biblical story of Christmas in 16 scenes set along the path. The nativity scenes are open to public for five or six days in the week between Christmas and New Year. |
