Over the past few weeks we’ve been interviewing some of the most respected and interesting travel bloggers on the internet who have visited Slovenia. It goes without saying that this installment is no different, and today we’re talking to duo Mikkel Paige And Dan Woodruff from Sometimes Home, to discuss their travels around the world and what they discovered in Slovenia.

Travel Interview: Mikkel Paige and Dan Woodruff from Sometimes Home
1. For our readers who don’t know you, please tell us a bit about yourselves and how you started to travel?
We are Mikkel and Dan of Sometimes Home. When wedding photography started to take me, Mikkel, around the world I found I loved sharing my experiences with family, friends and assorted readers in written blog posts.
Years later I met Dan and found we shared a love of traveling. Sometimes Home is a result of our shared passion for exploration; the name came because we’re truly sometimes home! We love having a home base but travel often. Check out our informative, fun timeline graphic to learn more about our story.
2. Please tell us about your travel blog Sometimes Home? When did you begin writing it? What makes it different from other travel blogs?
Our website was founded in 2016 and slowly, but surely, we’ve been creating strong content over the years. We were excited to take it to the next level over 2018, especially, and it’s been exciting to see its growth. We know we are providing motivation and know-how for people to get inspired for their next vacation or future travel dreams.
Our site is unique in its emphasis on good design, user experience and incredible photography.
3. How and when did you decide to explore Slovenia?
We wanted to explore a country that’s still a hidden gem and we could see a lot of it in seven days that wasn’t going to break the bank. (That was all the time we had, unfortunately, to get away for a quick vacation last fall!)
4. Do you have a favourite destination in Slovenia and why?
We loved Ptuj (such a nice surprise) and Piran! Ptuj was such a surprise – we hadn’t originally planned to go there but a local recommended it to us so we decided to go for a few hours. We’re SO glad we did! Here are 15 Photos that Will Convince You Ptuj, Slovenia is Worth Visiting.
Piran was great because of its geographical location on the Adriatic Sea and Italian vibe. It was also an unexpected surprise. Check out our 8 Favorite Things to do in Piran.
5. Is there anywhere you visited in Slovenia that did not live up to your expectations?
Not at all! Slovenia lived up to – and surpassed – any expectations we had.
6. Did you learn any Slovenian words words while you were in Slovenia?
We didn’t know a word of Slovenian before we arrived. We have listed some helpful words in our post “Helpful Tips and Facts to Know if You’re Traveling to Slovenia” for a crash course in helpful Slovenian vocabulary before arrival! Our personal favorite was “hvala!” which means thank you!
7. Have you tried any traditional Slovenian dishes or desserts such as the Carniolan sausage, Zlikrofi or Potica?
Yes! We dream of štruklji weekly! It was such a favorite and we’re sorry we don’t have it in America – all the more reason to visit Slovenia again. See our roundup of 15 Traditional Slovenian Foods to Delight Your Tastebuds.
8. What is your advice to others who want to visit and explore Slovenia?
Be open to the advice locals give you along the way, especially some smaller towns to visit. Also that driving in the country is really easy so we recommend renting a car to maximize the potential spots you can visit during your vacation.
9. How would you describe Slovenia in one word.
Inviting.
10. How would you describe your travel style and what can readers expect when they visit your blog and social media?
We write mainly about travel for couples on a mid-size to luxury budget who vacation a few times a year. We also cover lots of food and drinks, picturesque sites (because we love photography so much!) and hotels from boutique, to luxury to eco-friendly depending on the location.
Another unique thing we cover is “themed entertainment” including cruises.
11. Can you imagine life without travel?
Definitely not – travel enriches our lives in so many ways. It brings us true joy to be able to learn about different cultures and landscapes on this beautiful Earth through first-hand experience.
12. What is your favourite place in the world to travel to and why?
Spain for its passionate culture, beautiful cities and delectable food and wine, Norway for it’s architecture, nature and winter beauty and Japan for it’s utterly unique culture, incredible food and overall vibe.
13. If you had to give up your passport and get another country’s passport, what would you pick?
We would want to live in the European Union. Our hearts soar when traveling throughout Europe and we feel like it’s a really easy place to travel between countries and enjoy a lot of history and charm that’s been built through the centuries.
14. Have you visited a place that turned out to be completely different to how you imagined? If so, how?
We traveled to Colmar, France and were surprised by how German it was! We learned that it was because of its proximity to the German border and how it’s changed hands over the centuries. The food, language and architecture all has a lot of German influence even though it’s in the Alsace region of France.
15. You capture some beautiful photos of the destinations you visit. What favourite photos would you like to share with us from your trip in Slovenia?
Absolutely! Some of our favorites are from Maribor, Ptuj, Lake Bled and Bohinj and Piran. There was such beauty and inspiration everywhere we visited.

Metalkova Mesto is the heart and soul of Ljubljana’s bustling street art scene.

Wow… Amazing …. I really want to explore Slovenia.
Hidden gem. Crazy that people go to overtouristy cities in Spain/Italy/France when there is this magical place still undiscovered.
I lived in Slovenia for six years before I went traveling, and will definitely go back living there. For such small country, Slovenia has an enormous number of places to see and things to do.
