As in most European countries, the evening of the 24th is when most families celebrate and get together for a special meal, exchange gifts and attend midnight mass. There are Christmas markets taking place in all the larger towns, the most impressive being in Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana.
Slovenia’s Christmas markets are well worth visiting and not just for buying some special gifts. A wide range of entertainment is also provided, and you can easily spend several hours at these fascinating places.

The main Christmas market in Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana is held alongside the banks of the Ljubljanica river, but there are also other markets spread across the city’s squares, with a wide range of events and entertainment taking place until the New Year. The stalls are decorated with Christmas ornaments and serve roasted chestnuts, caramelized nuts, pancakes, hot dogs, burgers, kebabs and other similar foods. The most popular order on most of the stalls, however, is mulled wine! (photo: I. Boncina)

It has been almost 30 years since living nativity scenes have been staged inside the stunning Postojna Cave for the first time – over time, they have become a proper Christmas spectacle. Between December 25th and 30th the most visited cave in Europe transforms to a unique place with biblical scenes along several kilometres of trails in the beautiful underground space. A visit to the caves is magical whenever you visit, but on this occasion it is made even more so by the cast of actors and singers performing nativity scenes and Christmas songs. (photo: Iztok Medja)
