Introducing The Lipica Stud Farm
The Lipica Stud Farm is located at the edge of the Lipica village in the southwestern corner of Slovenia, close to the border with Italy. It is the cradle of all Lipizzaner (or Lipizzan) horses in the world, a breed which dates back to the 16th century in the time of Maria Theresa of Austria, when it was developed with the support of the Habsburg nobility. The Stud Farm is one of the oldest ones in the world with a tradition dating back to 1580! It is one of the most visited cultural and historical monuments in Slovenia. Nowadays it also includes a hotel and leisure complex, as well as the Lipikum Museum dedicated to various aspects of the stud and the Lipizzan breed.
Lipica Stud Farm Review
The Lipica stud farm is one of the most important and one of the most beautiful cultural and historical monuments in Slovenia, with the history reaching back to the year of 1580. It is the cradle of the famous and elegant Lipizzaner (a.k.a. Lipizzan) horse. These magnificent creatures are characterised by a perfect and noble physique, the ability to learn, graceful movements, liveliness, and good nature.
The Lipica stud farm opened its doors to tourists in the 1960s. In the 1990s, Lipica became a public institution that is owned by the Republic of Slovenia and has made a huge progress since then. The stud farm now successfully combines the rich natural and cultural heritage with modern tourist offer. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II visited Lipica and its stud farm in October of 2008 and was presented with a Lipizzaner horse as a gift from the Slovenian people.
Guided tours around the stud farm are available in Slovenian and English language. Upon prior request (at least 3 days before), the stud farm offers a guided tour also in German, Italian and French language. The tour is very enjoyable and provides a great overview of the history and the Lipizzaner breed and walks you through both the older and newer buildings that make up the Lipica stud farm with a chance to visit with both the stallions and the mares with their foals. Plus, it is also fascinating to see the horses and riders during a daily training session.

We are coming from London and Idaho, USA, but have a tight schedule as our conference starts the 18th in Portoroz. So this is our chance to see the famed Lipizzan horses.! We have been raising Peruvian Paso horses in Idaho since 1974 and other breeds, like Arabians, before then. So we do know horses. Unfortunately, we cannot arrive in Trieste until 4:30pm and would probably not be able to get to your farm until your last tour is almost over. We have a favor to ask, could we please look around and have a quick visit with horses and maybe see some training when we get there? And to arrange our tour shuttle, how long would that take? ( an hour or 1 and 1/2 hour would be sufficient) Thank you very much, Cheryl Hymas Look on Facebook for my daughter’s horses :Nicole Brass on Facebook
We visited there last year. You can watch them train the horses. It was a huge hit with my kids, especially our then seven-year-old, who was just beginning equestrian lessons.
