Introducing Main Square in Maribor
Main Square (Glavni trg) is Maribor’s second biggest square. It connects you to many top cultural and tourist attractions in the city, like the Aloysius Church, the beautiful Rotovz Town Hall, and the Old Bridge. But the square itself is worth seeing too, with its lovely historic buildings, the big Plague Column in the middle, and fun farmers’ markets from time to time.

Main Square (Glavni trg) in Maribor is a true gem—the city’s charming, historic heart that’s perfect for soaking up local vibes. This pedestrian-friendly square buzzes with life thanks to its colorful historic buildings, elegant facades in shades of orange, yellow, and white, and the stunning Rotovž Town Hall with its Renaissance details standing proudly on one side.
At the center, the grand Plague Column (from the 17th century) rises dramatically with its golden statue and intricate sculptures, making it a beautiful focal point for photos. It’s not overcrowded like some bigger European squares, so you can relax at one of the many outdoor cafés with umbrellas, sip coffee or a local wine, people-watch, or enjoy the occasional farmers’ market with fresh produce and crafts. The lively fountain adds a fun, refreshing touch, especially in summer, and at night the lights make everything feel magical and cozy.
Main Square is right in the heart of the old town, so it’s super easy to reach—especially on foot if you’re already exploring the city center. It is also generally wheelchair-friendly, as it’s a large, flat, pedestrian-only square in the old town with smooth paving in many areas and no major steps or steep inclines. However, like much of Maribor’s historic old town, parts feature cobblestones (especially around edges or side streets), which can be bumpy or tricky for manual wheelchairs—though they’re often smoother than in some older European cities.
