The Slovenian countryside is beautiful in May, when the crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum) fields bloom scarlet red.
With their red, conical blooms atop tall fleecy stems, one might think a field of crimson clover was planted purely for aesthetic appeal. However, this little plant is a tough workhorse in agriculture and in the last few years, crimson clover is also becoming an important source of nectar for honeybees and other pollinators in Slovenia.
Crimson clover flowers open from the bottom of the flower head to the top. Farmers hope for cool, cloudy days during the bloom period, so the flowers will open more slowly, giving the bees enough time to visit each one. If the weather is sunny and warm, all the blooms open at once, and not every flower gets pollinated, making the seed yield lower.
