Ljubljana Weather and Climate Information for Travel Planning

Ljubljana has temperate climate and four distinct seasons with fairly hot summers, cold winters, nice and pleasant spring and wet autumn. Spring lasts from late March to May. Summer lasts from June to early September. Autumn lasts from September to November. Winter lasts from December to March.

During the summer, the city itself can feel much hotter than coastal regions of Slovenia due to the lack of sea breezes that take the edge off the heat. The summer daytime temperatures are usually around 25°C, but sometimes quite higher, 30°C or more. However the summer months are also unpredictable, and odd days can rapidly change from sunshine to cloud. Spring and autumn temperatures are pleasant, with May and October often having temperatures above 20°C.

Ljubljana is quite protected from prevailing winds from the Atlantic and the centre of Europe, enjoying a position in a sheltered basin, exposed only to the south. As a result of this situation, the climate in Ljubljana can feel distinctly Mediterranean.

When to go – the best time to visit Ljubljana
A good time to visit Ljubljana is anytime, although most favour the spring, summer and autumn climate. However, don’t overlook the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, which brighten up even the harshest of winter weather in Ljubljana.

Many visitors to Ljubljana consider that the summer is the best time to enjoy all that the city has to offer and even the evening temperatures are favourable, enticing people to sit on the terraces, outside of central bars and restaurants. Early summer marks the end of the brief rainy season, although some heavy rain can be expected.

Autumns in Ljubljana and fairly short lived, since the summers can be long.

When the winter climate arrives, heavy overnight frosts add a noticeable crispness to the air, followed soon by spells of snowy weather. Although the winter climate is chilly, with December and January being especially cold, the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations often attract crowds to Ljubljana. Overnight temperatures average is below 0°C in the heart of winter, although usually stay well above freezing by day.

Spring is usually quite early and by the end of March, flowers are blooming and the trees quickly burst back into life, with daytime temperatures staying above 10°C.
