Predjama Castle Review

The Predjama Castle is a beautiful renaissance castle built in the mouth of a cave in the idyllic village of Predjama, near Postojna, in the Karst region of Slovenia. It was constructed in the Gothic style in the 13th century and is considered to be one of the more significant architectural masterpieces of that time. To prevent easy access, the castle was built under a natural rocky arch high in the stone wall. The castle has changed ownership several times through its rich history, but the most infamous owner was Erazem of Predjama (Erasmus), a knight who controlled the land in the late 15th century. There are many varying legends about him. Some legends say that he was a passionate, handsome and noble knight while on the other hand he is described as a bandit and a robber baron.

  1. Been here. There’s a legend that some guy holed himself up in the Predjama castle for more than a year while the castle was pounded with cannonballs, but the attacking forces didn’t get through. The only way they eventually succeeded was because a servant told them where the weak point was in the architecture of the castle. And the guy inside had a secret access and would taunt the attacking army with fresh foods.Took them forever to figure out how he was doing that.

    1. The story is even more weird then that, the weak spot just happened to be the toilet and one time when Erazem went to use it the servant placed a flag showing where it was and indicating that he was using it at the time. The single cannonball fired at the spot killing him as he was taking a dump.
