Introducing The Tito Square In Koper

Tito Square, or Titov Trg as it is called in Slovene, is the main square in Koper, the largest city on the Slovenian coast. Named for the former Yugoslav President for life Josip Broz Tito, the square is one of the few important public spaces in Slovenia that kept its socialist-era name. The square dates back centuries and is considered to be the most beautifully preserved Venetian square in the area. Surrounding the square, you’ll find some beautiful historical buildings that are well-preserved, including the 15th-century Praetorian Palace and Loggia in Venetian Gothic style, the 12th-century Carmine Rotunda church, and the Cathedral of St. Nazarius, with its 14th-century tower.

Tito Square Review

Tito Square is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of coastal Slovenia’s largest town Koper. This quite sizeable town square is the first place you should head when exploring Koper. This square is at the heart of Koper and many of central Koper’s narrow alleyways meet at this square including Cevljarska Ulica, Kidriceva Ulica and Trubarjeva Ulica. It is just a short ten minute walk from the port. The square dates back to the Venetian era and is home to several of the town’s main attractions. The most eye-catching is the white 15th-century Praetorian Palace, a striking example of Venetian-Gothic style. The palace houses the tourist information office which is very well stocked with free information and maps. Opposite the palace is the 15th-century Loggia, boasting Venetian-Gothic windows and a 16th-century statue of the Virgin and Child. Its ground-floor arcade is now a café, a lovely seating position looking onto the square and all that goes on. On the eastern side of the square is the Cathedral of St. Mary’s Assumption, a delightful amalgam of Romanesque and Baroque elements. Slightly away from the cathedral is the Venetian-style Bell Tower, a medieval defensive tower that was turned into a belfry in the 15th century. The square is also home to the circular 12th-century Rotunda of John the Baptist baptistery, which you will see if you look north.

The square is occasionally used for shows and events, some of which may have a stage set up. If you are visiting this fascinating square in the summer months, it may be best to visit it either earlier in the morning or during the late afternoon. The square is also manageable for those in a wheelchair. The area is flat and very easy, including the surrounding streets. There are cobblestones in the square, but completely manageable, and most of the streets leading away from the square are paved.
