About The Photographer
Gregor Skoberne is one of the most talented and passionate landscape and nature photographers in Slovenia. Although being born in Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana, he developed his interest in photography while spending summers with his grandmother in Bohinj, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful and tranquil places in Slovenia.
Completely self-taught, Gregor is primarily focused on the unique local landscape and nature found in the Lake Bohinj area with an aim to capture the spirit and the essence of the moment in his photographs. He loves to hike and explore the local land in search of new places, subjects and angles and frequents his favorite shooting locations to encounter new weather and light conditions. But shooting photographs on location is only a part of the process. As no camera can record exactly what the eye sees and the soul feels, he often employs various post-processing techniques to add his own touch to the scene in order to capture the feeling and mood of the moment as he himself felt it. With an intent to showcase the magical beauty of the Bohinj area and its nature, Gregor hopes that his photographs can evoke an emotional response in every viewer. His photographs have earned him a number of awards and have also been published in many local and even some international magazines and newspapers.
Below is a selection of 35 of Gregor’s photos that he kindly shared with us, but if you want to see more of his impressive landscape photography, you can visit his Facebook page Gregor Skoberne photography!

A beautiful picture gallery containing 35 stunning landscape photos of the Lake Bohinj area and the Julian Alps by Gregor Skoberne.
Lake Bohinj is a glacial lake tucked away in the northwest corner of Slovenia. Tranquil and set in stunning natural surroundings of the Triglav National Park, it is a wonderfully relaxing place to be.
Lake Bohinj is a stunning area of natural beauty. The lake is crystal clear and great to swim in during the summer. There is a church and stone bridge at one end of the lake and the mountains of the Julian Alps all around the rest. It’s a very popular place with photographers, sketchers, and artists due to the stunning nature surrounding it.
Lake Bohinj and surrounding mountains are best seen from a boat trip on the wooden electric boat (the motor boats are forbidden as the area is a national park). It is really peaceful going across to the other side of the lake and the water is crystal clear.
The Church of St. John the Baptist sits on the eastern end of Lake Bohinj. It’s quaint old medieval church, very pretty on the outside with wooden shingles and a small bell tower. The church is also worth a visit inside to explore its basic, simplistic charms.
Lake Bohinj is spectacular, famous for the still water and perfect reflection.
It is worth visiting Lake Bohinj anytime of the year as it is stunning!
Lake Bohinj is a well-known starting point for hikers and also attracts paragliders, climbers, mountain bikers, kayakers, fly-fishermen, and swimmers – in short it’s an outdoor enthusiast’s dream.
Lake Bohinj is known as the lake at the end of the world and on this breathtaking picture taken at the Vodnikov Lookout Point it really does seem like it’s at the end of the world. With the majestic Julian Alps as a backdrop, the lake seems to come from some heavenly realm, untouched and unspoilt by human interference.
Mostnica Gorge lies in the Voje valley northeast of Lake Bohinj. The crystal clear Mostnica stream has carved a 2-kilometer gorge which is really beautiful and you shouldn’t miss it if you are staying in the Bohinj area.
You’ll be amazed by what nature can do, when you visit the Mostnica gorge. It’s a lovely walk through the forest, at times rising high above the narrow canyon to glimpse the river snaking through the worn stone, at times dipping down to the water’s edge where the river curls sinuously through sluices and bowls and drops over countless ledges.
In the month of May, Bohinj farmers bring their cows up to the high dairy pastures of the Julian Alps, where the cows graze in fresh mountain air, eating nutrient-rich grasses and enjoying more free space.
Double Lake in the magical Valley of the Triglav Lakes, also known as the Valley of the Seven Lakes, in the heart of the Triglav National Park. This is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Julian Alps, famous for its seven lakes and other natural wonders. The lakes are located between 1319 and 2002 meters above sea level and each lake was named after its characteristics. When hiking here you enter into an oasis of untouched nature that embraces its visitors with exuberant beauty.
Lake Krn is located in the south of the Triglav National Park at an altitude of 1340 meters. It is the largest Slovenian alpine lake, 400 meters long, 150 meters wide and nearly 18 meters deep. There are actually three lakes around the Krn mountain, but this one is the most popular among hikers.
Mountain hiking trail to the Krn mountain is one of the most popular hikes in the Julian Alps. Mt Krn stands a little apart from the other mountains of the Julian Alps and so a climb to its summit is rewarded with some really stunning views over the Triglav National Park.
The beautiful nature of the larch-studded Komna Plateau above the lake of Bohinj.
The Alpine ibex, also known as the steinbock or bouquetin, is a species of wild goat that lives in the mountains of the European Alps and is common also in the Slovenian Alps.
Alpine ibexes are active during the day, feeding during the morning hours after sunrise, taking a midday rest, and then feeding again in the late afternoon. The breeding season happens in late autumn, when there are spectacular fights between males, often without physical damage.
This eerie photo was snapped by Gregor Skoberne while hiking on the ridge of Lepo Spicje in the Julian Alps above Lake Bohinj. Those who love hiking may have observed a strange and startling phenomenon: a shadowy, almost ghostly outline of a person magnified by a misty halo around it. This seemingly supernatural experience is called a Brocken Spectre – a hiker standing in front of a low sun on a ridge or peak on a misty or foggy day. The Brocken Spectre was observed and first described by theologian and natural scientist Johann Silberschlag in 1780.
This beautiful rainbow was captured by Gregor Skoberne on the Prehodavci saddle in the Julian Alps. We’ve always been fascinated by rainbows. Beautiful, colorful and short-lived they are ones of the many wonders of nature. They can create happiness for those who see them and they are symbols of hope and promise.

The Koca pod Bogatinim mountain hut is situated in a vast valley with the Na Kraju alpine pasture, which has the central position on the crossing from Spodnja to Lepa Komna.
Simpler forms of hayracks are known all over the Alps, but the more complex ones, like the Toplar, are unique to Slovenia. And the best place to see them is in the Lake Bohinj area.
The Milky Way over Bohinj. The night sky is majestic while its beauty leaves one breathless in wonder.

Laz Alpine pasture (Planina v Lazu) is a kind of vast clearing in the center of which lies a hamlet of wooden barns and farmhouses in the loveliest local style.
Beautifully captured sun rays filtering through the trees near the Savica waterfall.
The magnificent Savica Waterfall is an amazing natural attraction situated above Lake Bohinj. This waterfall is really something special. From the the Valley Of The Seven Lakes in Triglav National Park the water descends through the rocks of Komarca and bursts out of the sheer rock wall as a waterfall. The total drop is 78 meters, a second neighboring smaller waterfall falls 25 meters deep.
Thank you so much Gregor Skoberne for sharing all these incredible photos of Lake Bohinj and the Julian Alps with us. You do a fantastic job! Your photos are remarkable and gorgeously convey the amazingness of Bohinj and its surrounding area!
