Kanin Sella Nevea Ski Resort Review
Perched high above the town of Bovec and the picturesque Soca valley, Kanin is the highest ski resort in Slovenia. It can be accessed by a cable car, which runs from Bovec’s southern outskirts.
In 2009 it was connected to the Sella Nevea ski centre on the Italian side by a modern cable-car lift with cabins able to carry 100 passengers at a time, making it Slovenia’s only cross-border resort. The cable car bridges the gap between a mountain valley on the Italian side, up to the Slovenian border where a quad chairlift awaits to take you to Sedlo at an altitude of 2,292 meters, the highest lift-served point in Slovenia. From here you may be able to get a glimpse of the Adriatic Sea away to the west, as well as the jagged ridge of the Julian Alps stretching away north.
When on top, one option is to ski down into Slovenia and towards the town of Bovec far below in the Soca valley. In fact, sitting at less than 500 metres above sea level, the enormous vertical descent is not normally skiable all the way and the marked piste ends at the mid-station of the two-part gondola that brings skiers up from the town to the slopes.
With a good range of slopes the Kanin Sella Nevea ski resort appeals to everyone from complete beginners to the more advanced skiers and snowboarders.
The Prevala piste is particularly interesting and starts at the highest point at an altitude of 2,292 meters at Sedlo in Slovenia. It than goes through the high, treeless valley down into Italy, although you may be tempted (if skiing with a local guide and knowing the snow is deep) to take a right turn and drop into the off-piste itinerary of Krnica, a 1,310-metre vertical descent that stays on the Slovenian side of the border and drops down through the forest. Back on the Prevala piste, the lower section offers more of the same as the run continues below the new cable car. If you take the triple chair at the end of the run it connects you with the latter half of the descent, around 800 vertical metres more down to the base of Sella Nevea.
There are many off-piste opportunities at Kanin, but we wouldn’t recommend this without a very experienced guide. A nice sledding area is available too.
The Bovec municipality wants to modernise the Slovenian side of the resort in the coming years. The first step will be a new cable car, for which a company from France is already preparing conceptual designs.
To get to the Kanin Sella Nevea ski resort from Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana, head west on the A1 motorway towards the town of Koper, then leave the motorway for Tolmin. Once there follow Kobarid and then Bovec. Total travel time is a few minutes under 2 hours.
