Vogel Ski Resort Overview
Vogel Ski Resort is a Slovenian ski resort located in Bohinj above Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest lake. It’s located at an elevation between 560 and 1,800 meters and in all it has 22 kilometres of ski slopes (9,5 kilometres of easy difficulty and 12,5 kilometres of intermediate difficulty), 8 kilometres tracks for cross country skiing and a snowboard park.
To get to it you have to take the cable car. There is plenty of snow due to its altitude, and a longer-than-average season which runs from mid-November to the beginning of May. It’s within the Triglav national park, one of the oldest national parks in Europe, so it’s protected from development and artificial snow-making is not permitted. It definitely feels unspoiled and offers some of the most magnificent views in the world, overlooking Lake Bohinj’s crystal clear blue water and the mighty mountains of the Julian Alps with their highest peak, Mt. Triglav. Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana is about an hour away. The resort was opened in 1964.
Vogel Ski Resort Review
With a total of 22 kilometres of ski slopes, the ski area is on the small-to-medium size. It has several blue and red runs and a little unusual way of marking them with piste markers. You may start down a red run and then find the piste marker poles are blue but turn back to red further down, this signifies that that particular section of the piste is less steep than a red. On the piste map and on the lift start points there are graphs showing the steepness profiles of the runs, useful for example if you want to find a not too steep blue. Blue run 4 is a really wide long piste, not too steep, great for developing your style and for beginners graduating to blue runs. Red runs 10 and 11 are great and run 10 combined with 14 make an unmissable 9-kilometre run down to the valley and the bottom of the cable car through wonderful scenery.
For beginners there’s a travelator belt for getting to the top of the nursery area, this is ideal for small children.
You can hire skis from one of the rental companies/schools based at the top of the mountain. The resort is well equipped and there are plenty of places to have a drink or food for reasonable prices and enjoy the stunning views.
It is advisable not to leave it to mid morning to arrive as the car parks tend to get full. You can get a local ski pass or use an all area ski pass if you want to try a number of different ski resorts. Apres-ski involves soaking in the beauty of the Bohinj valley, perhaps a walk around the lake, no clubs or trendy bars.

First, you have to know that Bohinj is an area – not a town. It is a 20 kilometre long and 5 kilometre wide basin in the Julian Alps in northwestern part of Slovenia. The area is very popular due to its beautiful unspoiled nature with one of the most imposing parts of the valley being Lake Bohinj, the largest of the Slovenian lakes. There are several small villages and hamlets in Bohinj with the largest one being Bohinjska Bistrica. The villages that lie in the immediate vicinity of the lake are Ribcev Laz, Ukanc and Stara Fuzina. |
