All You Need To Know To Visit The Tolmin Gorge, Slovenia

Introducing The Tolmin Gorge

Tolmin Gorge is situated at the southern-most portion of the Triglav National Park at the confluence of the Tolminka and Zadlascica streams in northwestern Slovenia. It is 1,000 meters long, between 5 and 10 meters wide and up to 60 meters deep. Not surprisingly, it’s the most visited natural attraction in the Tolmin area.

Tolmin Gorge Review

Tolmin Gorge is situated in the southern most tip of Triglav National Park, less than a 5 minute drive from the town of Tolmin (south of Kobarid and Bovec and north of Most na Soci). It’s pretty easy to access and the trail is well set out and well maintained and protected. The walk is a little strenuous in places but it’s not a difficult hike. It’s maybe a little risky for families with small children, or for the elderly, because of the many slippery rocks and some wet dark tunnels. Definitely wear decent hiking shoes – not flip-flops or something with slippery soles, because the steep stone steps tend to get a bit uneven and are quite narrow at times as well as slippery. The roundtrip takes a little more than an hour and takes you up to Dante’s Cave (take a torch or headlamp if you want to have a little look in it), across the Devil’s Bridge (it’s quite high and offers some stunning views) and to a very interesting triangular rock called the Bear’s Head. The water is crystal clear, cold and it’s really the color you see on the images of this lovely gorge. There are lots of opportunities for photos so don’t forget to take your camera with you. For those that want to stay a little longer, there are longer walks on a bit of a steeper incline.

Just outside the entrance to the gorge, there’s a pleasant little restaurant and bar. The entrance fee of €4 for adults, €3 for students and €2 for children, is used to keep this area well maintained and protected. The information at the entrance is in several languages and very clear and helpful. The gorge is open from April until the second week of November, during winter months it’s closed for security reasons.

Timetable: April 09:00-18:00; May 09:00-19:00; June, July and August 08:30-19:30; September 09:00-18:30; October 09:00-17:00; first week of November 09:00-16:00; November 10th to March 31st closed.

  2. We traveled to Tolmin Gorge with our two children (4 and 6 year old) and we felt completely safe with them. The views were breathtaking and I felt like I was snapping pictures every few seconds. A beautiful outdoor retreat.
